Chester "Chet" Payne

OTTUMWA — Chester "Chet" Payne, 64, of 1103 Traul Ave., died Jan. 9, 2010, at Hospice House.He was born Jan. 16, 1945, in Southgate, Calif., to John William and Merle Powell Payne. He married Donna Smith July 4, 1970.He served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. He worked 25 years for Plexco and Iowa Beverage and the last seven years for the USDA.He was a member of the National Hot Rod Association. His hobbies included drag racing and taking naps.Surviving are his wife, Donna; a son, Cody (Christy) Payne of Ottumwa; a daughter, Casey Payne of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two granddaughters, Morgan and Shelby Payne; two sisters, Beverly Dreyer of Murrieta, Calif., and Marla Benson of Corona, Calif.He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter, Caitlyn Ann.His body has been cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice, P.O. Box 1150, Ottumwa, Iowa 52501.Reece Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
